Seanamico has positively concluded a Friend of the Sea renewal audit for black tiger shrimp it produces at sustainable aquaculture ponds in Vietnam. Packaging containing such product can now display the Friend of the Sea sustainability seal of approval.
The farming site is located in the coastal area of Ca Mau province. From an environmental perspective, Seanamico conducts a low-impact aquaculture operation which complies with all Friend of the Sea standards. The farming activity generates no critical alteration to surrounding ecosystems, such as the mangrove forest. An advanced system of monitoring screens and sluice gates prevents escape of cultured shrimp, and simultaneously bars entry of outside organisms.
“We believe that Friend of the Sea is the best recognized aquaculture sustainability standard,” stated Ngo Minh Hien of Seanamico. “The achievement of this certification is a very clear message to customers about our commitment.”
Friend of the Sea is an international certification program for products from sustainable fisheries and aquaculture. Over 350 companies in more than 50 countries have relied on it to assess the sustainability of their seafood origins. Audits, based on best and most updated available scientific data, are run by accredited independent certification bodies.
Seanamico previously received certification for organic shrimp production from Naturland of Germany and IMO of Switzerland.
Established in 1983, the company has two factories that pack frozen black tiger shrimp, in addition to white and pink shrimp. Both are based in Namcan town, which is regarded as the biggest farmed shrimp center of Vietnam.
