Oakland, California-based Dreyer’s Ice Cream, a Nestlé brand distributed in the United States, has announced the launch of a classic American treat – frozen custard. Six flavors are now available in the freezer sections of supermarkets and other retail outlets nationwide.
Frozen custard is said to have debuted in 1919 in Coney Island, New York, when ice cream vendors Elton and Archie Kohr discovered that adding egg yolks to ice cream created a smoother texture and helped the product stay cold longer on hot summer days. In 1933 it was introduced to a wider audience at the World’s Fair in Chicago, and soon thereafter became especially popular in the nation’s Midwest, as many roadside custard stands opened for business.
The six choices offered by Dreyer’s are representative of the classic flavors and mix-in offerings found in contemporary frozen custard stands, and pay homage to consumer favorites. They are: Old Fashioned Vanilla, Chocolate Malt, Mint Cookies n’ Cream, Peanut Butter Pie, Salted Caramel Pretzel (a combination of sweet cream frozen custard, chocolaty covered pretzel pieces and an ample swirl of salted caramel) and Snickerdoodle (cookie pieces and cinnamon graham swirls mixed into vanilla frozen custard).
“Frozen custard is traditionally viewed as a treat that families would leave their homes to enjoy. We’re pleased to be able to bring this beloved dessert into freezers across the country for families to enjoy in the comfort of their homes,” said Jason Merideth, brand manager for Dreyer’s Ice Cream. “The innovation that went into creating the perfect experience of classic custard flavors and high quality, wholesome ingredients with no artificial colors or flavors is something we are proud to stand by.”
Packaging for the new collection was developed in partnership with Sterling Brands. Introduced in 32 oz. cartons, the product line’s suggested retail price range is $4.99-$5.49.
