While Chinese New Year feasting and fireworks are now over, and Spring Festival celebrations concluded on February 22, there’s no reason to stop enjoying traditional dumplings with family and friends – even if you don’t know how to make the tasty treats from scratch. Beginning this April at Meijer and Publix supermarket outlets in the United States, followed will a full-scale national rollout in June, shoppers will have the convenience of picking up Signature Pork and Chicken Dumplings distributed by ConAgra Foods under the P.F. Chang’s Home Menu line.
Based on P.F. Chang’s China Bistro recipes and co-developed with the restaurant chain’s co-founder Philip Chiang, the appetizers come in 8.2-ounce (232-gram) eight-packs. Signature Chicken Dumplings are made of dark meat chicken, shredded cabbage and sliced scallions. The pork offering features ground meat, and both boast high meat-to-vegetable ratios and dipping sauce.
Amanda Vuu, an associate development chef with ConAgra, noted that the Omaha, Nebraska-based team worked diligently with P.F. Chang’s bistro personnel to choose the right ingredients for the retail product line.
“For example,” she said, “we made sure to use pork shoulder (one of the tastiest parts of the pig) to result in a juicy dumpling. We also worked to find the right balance between all the flavors for a salty and savory dumpling that pairs perfectly with the slightly sweet, hot mustard-soy dipping sauce that comes with them.
“Anybody who is a P.F. Chang’s fan knows about the condiments trio served with the dumplings, and this dipping sauce is made with the same ingredients,” continued Vuu. “Even the dumpling wrapper is rolled to a similar thickness as a homemade dumpling to ensure a chewy wrapper.”
