Kontos Foods, a Patterson, New Jersey, USA-based manufacturer and distributor of frozen artisan breads and Mediterranean-style specialty foods, on July 26 launched a 12-inch Gluten-Free Pre-Grilled Wrap. Primarily targeted to foodservice customers, the new product is certified wheat-free as well as gluten-free.
“The request for gluten-free wraps initially came from one of our larger foodservice distributors in Toronto, Canada. With many consumers severely sensitive to gluten, we decided that it was an important product to add to our line of wraps for restaurants and foodservice establishments across North America. We are delighted that Restaurant Depot has chosen to carry it,” said Steve Kontos, vice president of the family-owned company founded by his father in 1987.
The latest offering been specifically developed to fit the needs of people who are looking for wheat and gluten-free options, but still want to enjoy eating wrap sandwiches. The 100% vegetarian product contains tapioca starch, water, rice flour, soybean flour and other wholesome ingredients.
“It features grill marks on one side, to create a café-style look. Or, food purveyors can flip the wrap and hide the grill marks if desired,” said Warren Stoll, marketing director. “At 12 inches across, it is large enough to make a hearty sandwich wrap that can be easily sliced in two pieces.”
Meanwhile, Kontos exhibited its flatbread, pita bread and fillo products on July 27 at the Mayca Foodservice Show in Costa Rica, which is expected to attract approximately 2,000 visitors. The annual event is produced in conjunction with Sysco Corp., a part owner of Mayca Distribuidores S.A., a leading food distributor in the region.
“We’re were very excited to attend the show for the first time, and partner with blue chip companies such as Sysco and Mayca. As our efforts to expand globally continue, this show provides important exposure to the Central American market,” said Kontos.
