Let the holiday seafood price war begin in the United Kingdom! The Lidl discount grocery store chain will fire the first shot on Saturday, November 26, with the best bargain lobster in Britain offered at the low price of £2.99. That’s 50% off the $5.99 price that has been charged recently for frozen deluxe lobsters.
The retailer, which refers to the one-day-only deal as a “social price drop,” says that more prices will be slashed this Christmas season “based on social chatter.” The way its downward pricing program works, the more consumers tweet about selected products on Twitter, the lower the price goes.
As shoppers are limited to buying just one lobster each on Saturday, seafood-loving family members will likely arrive early in the morning and separately check out purchases to maximize value for money while supplies last.
Meanwhile, consumers chatting on the Lidl UK Facebook page are suggesting future meal deals.
“Beef Wellington next week, please,” put forth Dean Caley.
Lidl’s reply: “Serrano Ham is next week’s promotion, Dean!”
“We’re incredibly excited about giving our customers the power on Twitter to lower the price of some of our finest festive products,” said Lidl’s Georgina Hall. “Christmas is a very expensive time of year for shoppers up and down the country, and our ambition is to put the control back into the hands of consumers, and save them even more in the run up to Christmas.”
