Lampasas, Texas-based Ajinomoto Windsor, Inc. is recalling approximately 35,168 pounds of frozen ready-to-eat beef taquitos products that may be contaminated with extraneous materials, specifically rubber with plastic, the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced on March 24.
On the same day FSIS reported that Dundee, Mississippi-headquartered Lakes Farm Raised Catfish Inc. is recalling 1,695 pounds of siluriformes fish (catfish) products that may be adulterated with violative levels of Malachite Green and Leucomalachite Green chemical residues.
There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of either the taquitos or catfish. Persons concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider. The products should not be consumed, but instead thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.
The Mexican-style snack items in question, produced by Ajinomoto Windsor on December 30, 2016, are packed in 60-oz. plastic bags contained inside corrugated boxes labeled José Olé Taquitos Beef Carne De Res in Corn Tortillas Crispy and Crunchy.” Case codes are 3366365A, 3366365B, 3366365C and 3366365D.
The products have a “Best By” date of December 30, 2017, and bear the establishment number “Est. M-5590” inside the USDA mark of inspection. Shipments went to retail outlets in California, Florida, Illinois, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas and Wyoming.
The problem was discovered when Ajinomoto Windsor received two consumer complaints of foreign material in its ready-to-eat beef taquitos on March 14 and March 21, 2017. The pieces of rubber with white plastic originated from the factory’s processing equipment.
Meanwhile, the Lakes Farm Raised Catfish recall involves frozen siluriformes products produced from March 14-17 and shipped to institutional and retail locations in Mississippi and Tennessee. Distributed in 15-pound cardboard boxes in fillet, nugget, steak and raw whole form, they carry lot codes T-14, T-15, T-16 and T-17, and bear establishment number “EST. 48150” inside the USDA mark of inspection.
