When you’re hot you’re hot, and as far as the Burger King fast food restaurant chain is concerned, UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor is both hot and heavy enough to punch up orders for its Spicy Crispy Chicken Sandwich. In fact, according to a recently issued press release, he’s “the only person who can handle the heat.”
The 29-year-old Irish mixed martial arts (MMA) athlete and professional boxer, who often refers to himself as “King,” is currently co-starring in a TV commercial with the long-crowned Burger King mascot to promote the hotter version of the QSR’s breaded white meat chicken served up in a potato bun.
The spot portrays the two “kings” aboard McGregor’s private jet – sitting no doubt in King Class seats – where the fighter proclaims that chicken talk from opponents [Khabib Nurmagodomedoz called him a chicken after a bout] has him “really fired up.” Upon biting into the Spicy Crispy Chicken Sandwich, McGregor declares: “From one king to another, this packs a real kick!”
The “Notorious Mystic Mac” goes on to say that the sandwich does not stand a chance, and that he’s going to “destroy it.” Then the Dubliner thanks his trash-talking rivals for “helping put Conor Junior through college.”
Burger King’s Mystic Mac attack ad should do well in the YouTube commercial repeat universe, based on McGregor’s ongoing popularity among UFC fans notwithstanding the fact he has not stepped into the octagon since beating Eddie Alvarez to win the Lightweight Championship in November of 2016. McGregor ranks as the biggest pay-per-view (PPV) draw in MMA full-contact combat sport history, having headlined four out of the six highest-selling UFC pay-per-view events. On top of that, his boxing match against Floyd Mayweather in Las Vegas last August generated 4.3 million PPV purchases in North America, the second highest volume in history.
Burger King’s Spicy Crispy Chicken Sandwich is made with juicy, tender and crispy 100% white meat chicken, seasoned and breaded with bold flavors and topped with lettuce, tomato and creamy mayonnaise all on a potato bun.
