McCain Foods aims to spend AU $37 million (approximately US $26 million) to increase capacity at its frozen potato products factory in Smithton, Tasmania, Australia. Work on the upgrade will begin in April, and it is expected that the job will be finished by January of 2020.

190314 mccain graphic01“This investment is a major vote of confidence in Smithton, our 95-strong workforce and the top quality products they manufacture every single day. The potato plant is already one of Smithton’s largest employers and we are delighted to be in a position to further grow our Tasmanian footprint, increase production and create new jobs locally,” said Claudia Martinez, McCain Foods’ managing director for Australia and New Zealand.

While the facility has been upgraded several times since it was built in 1987, the current improvement project will make the Smithton operation the company’s primary retail french fry production plant in the Australia-New Zealand region. In addition to a wide assortment of fries, the company produces hash browns and bites, wedges, roast potatoes, sweet potato cross trax and other frozen potato products.
