The US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has announced that Denison, Texas-based Ruiz Foods Products is recalling approximately 246,514 pounds of frozen, not ready-to-eat (NRTE) breakfast wrap products containing bacon that may be contaminated with extraneous materials – specifically small rocks.
The frozen egg, potato, bacon and cheese wraps were produced on January 17 and 18, 2019, under the El Monterey brand. They were distributed in 8-unit family size film packages carrying “Best if Used By” dates of 01/17/2020 and 01/18/2020, and lot codes 19017 and 19018.
The products subject to recall bear establishment number “EST. 17523A” on the back of packaging. They were shipped to retail stores nationwide.
The problem was made public after Ruiz Foods advised FSIS of three consumer complaints regarding foreign material in the wrap products. The firm continues to investigate the source of the foreign material.
The company received notice of a potential injury associated with the consumption of the product. FSIS has received no additional reports of injury or illness from consumption of the breakfast wraps. Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider.
FSIS is concerned that some of the packs may be in consumers’ freezers. Consumers who have purchased the wraps are urged not to consume them. They should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase for a refund.
Frozen Spinach Recall
Elsewhere, Sprouts Farmers Market is voluntarily recalling 16-ounce bags of organic and non-organic frozen spinach leaves from its retail stores in the United States after finding traces of Listeria monocytogenes following random tests for contamination. The product was packed in Oregon by Seattle, Washington-headquartered National Frozen Foods.
The recalled spinach, distributed in 19 states across the nation from California to Pennsylvania, are identified as follows:

Listeria can cause short-term symptoms of headaches, fever, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. It is also known to cause fatal infections among persons with weak immune systems such as the elderly and children, as well as cause miscarriages and stillborn births among pregnant women.
Consumers who have bought the recalled frozen spinach are asked to return it to the store for a full refund. Additionally, those who have questions are encouraged to call Sprouts at +1 888-577-7688 from 8 AM to 5 PM Pacific Standard time.
Red Raspberry Recall
Elsewhere, WinCo Foods, LLC of Boise, Idaho is recalling 12-ounce bags of frozen red raspberries manufactured by Rader Farms of Bellingham, Washington, because of the potential of contents to be contaminated with the highly contagious Norovirus. Typical symptoms of those stricken by the viral infection are acute onset of vomiting, watery, non-bloody diarrhea with abdominal cramps, and nausea. Systemic manifestations include, fever, myalgia and malaise, anorexia, and headache. Although most symptoms end within 48 hours, the elderly, young children and immunocompromised persons may develop prolonged, or more severe symptoms.
WinCo Foods has removed the potentially affected private label product from store shelves in Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, Washington, Texas, and Utah.
