Dinuba, California-headquartered Ruiz Food Products is recalling approximately 55,013 pounds of frozen, not ready-to-eat breakfast burrito products featuring tortillas filled with egg, sausage and cheese that may be contaminated with pieces of plastic, the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced on December 10.
The 3.38-lb. (1.53-kg.) El Monterey Signature brand microwaveable burritos in 12-packs were produced at a plant in Florence, South Carolina on October 15, 2019, and shipped to retail stores throughout the United States. They have a “Best if Used By” date of 01/15/2021 and a lot code of 19288. The products subject to recall bear establishment number “EST 45694” printed on the bag container and the individual wrappings, next to the lot code.
FSIS was made aware of the problem when the producer reported that three consumer complaints were received regarding pieces of white, semi-rigid plastic found in the product. Thus far there have been no confirmed injuries due to consumption of the burritos. Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider immediately.
Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them, but to discard them or return packages to the place of purchase for a full refund.
