The 20th Cibus International Food Exhibition, previously slated for May 11-14 in Parma, has been rescheduled for September 1-4, 2020, as Italy is in the throes of the deadly Covid-19 epidemic that has locked down the nation and banned entry of all tourist arrivals at Parma as well as Alessandria, Asti, Lombardy, Modena, Novara, Padova, Pesaro and Urbino, Piacenza, Reggio Emilia, Rimini, Treviso-Venice, Verbano-Cusio-Ossola and Vercelli airports.
As of March 16 there were 24,747 confirmed cases of the infection in Italy, where the number of fatalities has climbed to 1,809. Internationally, the death toll has topped 6,500. Global infections outside of China (88,357) have surpassed the number of officially confirmed cases in the PRC (81,020), where the outbreak originated in Hubei Province late last year. On a positive note, 77,256 people have reportedly recovered from the disease.
The unpredictable development of the Covid-19 outbreak and specifically the intensification of flight restrictions from and to Italy have made the postponement of Cibus necessary. Therefore, after talks with the delegates of exhibitors and the Italian agrifood supply chains, as well as with the international buyers, Fiere di Parma and Federalimentare mutually agreed to reschedule the show for early September.
The last running of Italy’s premier food and beverage trade fair, held in May of 2018, attracted more than 82,000 visitors and 3,100 “Made in Italy” food companies. The exhibition occupied over 135,000 square meters of space.
