Having grown the plant-based food product market by more than 80% in Spain, Heura is moving from land to sea as it expands across Europe with the introduction of two new faux fish SKUs. After more than a year of research and development, the Barcelona-based company is offering retail as well as foodservice operators plant-based frozen F’sh Fingers and chilled F’sh Fillet Fillet.
Providing 40mg of Omega-3, each serving is low in saturated fat and rich in protein, F’sh Fillet features a Mediterranean-style batter with a juicy texture, while F’sh Fingers are crunchy and well suited for sharing occasions.
“Science and data have shown us the importance of keeping marine ecosystems intact, and the best way to do so is to reduce human activity to the minimum,” said Marc Coloma, a food activist who also happens to be the chief executive officer and co-founder of Heura. “As a mission-driven food-tech startup steeped in Mediterranean heritage, we recognized the need to introduce fish successors, so people can continue to enjoy the foods we love, while minimizing the negative impact on the planet and animals.”
Heura is reportedly the first company to conduct a Comparative Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for plant-based fish alternative products, according to the ISO 14040 standard. The study’s preliminary results found that its F’sh Fillet and F’sh Fingers have more than 70% less climate impact than real fish.
Throughout 2023, Heura will remain focused on building a net-positive food system throughout Europe by accelerating the plant-based protein transition. Solidifying its growth through innovation, the company is filing patents, with new technology slated to debut this year. Additionally, partnerships with major European retailers will be announced in Q1, as well as details on the company’s triple-digit growth.
