“The eyes of Texas are upon you,” as the University of Texas school spirt song reminds college football fans in the USA when the Longhorns take to the field. Meanwhile, in the United Kingdom, the eyes of frozen food shoppers will soon be upon Texas Style BBQ Popcorn Chicken as the offering is about to be launched in supermarkets under the Birds Eye’s Chicken Shop sub-brand.
Priced at £3 per 325-gram pack, the 100% breast meat product is slated to debut at Tesco stores on September 6 and at Morrisons outlets a week later. It will joins a number of American foodservice-style SKUs in the line, including Southern Fried Chicken Wings and Southern Fried Nuggets. Among other items on the Chicken Shop menu are Maple and BBQ Chicken Wings, Buttermilk Chicken Strips and Sizzler Burgers.
“Consumers still want, and will continue to want, restaurant-inspired meals from the comfort of their own homes,” said Birds Eye Marketing Manager Annalisa Fanali. “Our Chicken Shop range has proven to be a very popular way to meet that demand, bringing 78% in incremental value sales to the category [according to Kantar figures for the 52-week period ending on January 24, 2021].”
