GaratJavier Garat, secretary general of the Spanish Fishing Confederation (Cepesca), will open the Seaweb Seafood Summit on June 19 with the official welcome address. The three-day event, now in its 14th year, will be held at the Hotel Arts in Barcelona, Spain.

In addition to the conference program, attendees will be able to participate in a pre-conference seminar, lightning-round talks and a field trip around the host city. The pre-conference seminar, entitled “The State of Global Tuna Sustainability,” will see seafood experts focus on diving deep into issues surrounding this species. It is one of the world’s most popular and commercially valuable fish, but also one of the most highly exploited.

The full-day program will be facilitated by Tom Pickerell, global tuna director for the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP). He will give those in attendance a comprehensive overview of current issues, which include bycatch problems, lack of comprehensive management strategies, IUU activity on the high seas, and Human Rights & Labor abuses. Also explored will be ways to combat these issues on company, conservation and collaborative levels.

Lightning Rounds are Back

The Seaweb Seafood Summit lightning rounds, returning by popular demand, are 10-minute single-presenter talks happening before and after lunch on Wednesday, June 20, from 12:00 to 12:45 and 14:30 to 15:45. In these short talks, seafood experts will each introduce a topic, provide a concise, high-level overview, and leave the audience with ways to explore it later in greater depth. Issues include the future of fisheries monitoring, offshore aquaculture’s mainstream-bound momentum, and other topics.

The SeaWeb Seafood Summit, a project of The Ocean Foundation, is organized in partnership with Diversified Communications. For more information, visit: www.seaweb.org.
