Seafood Connection Buys Frozen Fish Business from Anova
Urk, Holland-headquartered Seafood Connection, a subsidiary of Japan’s Maruha Nichiro, has reached an agreement to acquire Anova Seafood’s frozen fish operation. Terms of the transaction, which will go in effect on January 1, 2019, were not disclosed.
In recent years, ’s-Hertogenbosch, Holland-based Anova has become a significant player both in frozen and non-frozen seafood products, mainly in the European market. Products are supplied under the proprietary Anova, Sea & We and Del Mare brands as well as several private labels.
"We see a lot potential in adding Anova’s portfolio to our current business, as it will strengthen our position in sourcing, processing and sales of seafood products," said Jan Kaptijn, chief executive officer of Seafood Connection.
Following Anova’s pending departure from the frozen sector, the company plans to further specialize in the sales of fresh and chilled seafood packed at its facilities in the Netherlands.
"We aim to strengthen and expand our position in those segments, and therefore have redirected our strategic focus in the direction of fresh and chilled products,” said Constant Mulder, co-owner of Anova Seafood.
Seafood Connection, part of Maruha Nichiro Corporation since 2013, is a major European supplier of a wide range of quality frozen seafood products distributed through retail and foodservice channels as well as through wholesalers and food processing companies. Its portfolio includes fillets from farm-raised pangasius and tilapia, in addition to Alaska pollock kibbeling, Atlantic salmon, octopus, king crab, squid, tuna, shrimp and Patagonian toothfish.
