Conagra Brands officially notified that state of Wisconsin on January 25 that it will close its Sandwich Bros. of Wisconsin production plant In Milwaukee on April 2. The action will result in unemployment for 190 people, of which 172 are factory workers and 18 are engaged in management and administrative functions.
The reason for the closure, according to Chicago, Illinois-headquartered Conagra, is to “improve efficiencies and effectiveness” within the supply chain network. It did not state where the product will be produced after the Milwaukee is shuttered.
Conagra acquired Sandwich Bros., a specialist producer of frozen breakfast and entrée flatbread pocket sandwiches founded by John and George Kashou in 1979, from Kangaroo Brands three years ago for $87 million. The sandwiches contain fillings of Angus beef, chicken and turkey raised without antibiotics, all-natural sausage and American cheese. Distribution is nationwide to grocery, club and convenience stores and mass merchandisers, in addition to customers in the foodservice, military and private label sectors.
