Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) is entering the value-added frozen foods business with the introduction of Amul brand parathas, patties and samosas, according to a March 26 report in The Times of India.

Amul logo“We are venturing into the frozen snacks segment. Around seven to eight types of products will be launched in the next two weeks, including paneer and cheese parathas, patties and samosas,” said R. S. Sodhi, managing director of Anand-headquartered GCMMF. “We are also looking at what other snacks could be offered in future.”

A powerhouse in the milk and dairy products industry with sales equivalent to US $3.4 billion during 2015, GCMMF produces and sells ice cream and a wide portfolio of other products under the well-established Amul brand. Its EPIC bars, which contain 16% milk fat and have less aeration compared to most other ice creams on the domestic market, are coated with Belgian chocolate and almond pieces.

“A robust cold chain is required for frozen products. Amul is the only player which has well-established cold chain network with 66 depots and outlets from Leh Ladakh to Kanyakumari and from Jaisalmer to Shillong,” pointed out Sodhi. “Frozen food products are already being consumed in India. Hence, we thought of venturing into it.”
