Nestlé Prepared Foods Company is recalling approximately 26,400 pounds of frozen pork and beef products in the United States due to misbranding and undeclared allergens, the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced on November 8. The problem is that eggs, milk, soy, and wheat, which are known allergens, were not declared on the label.
Subject to immediate recalls are the following Hot Pockets brand snack and breakfast items that were produced at the company’s plant in Mount Sterling, Kentucky, on September 21, 2016, January 10, 2017 and January 13, 2017:
- 2,400-lb. bulk packages of BBQ Burger Bites
- 16,800-lb. bulk packages of 3 Cheese Bacon Bites
- 7,200-lb. bulk packages of Sausage, Egg, and Cheese Snack Bites
All of the above were donated to a charitable organization, which further distributed the products to a food bank in Missouri. They may have been repackaged and further distributed to additional food banks in the state. The Hot Pockets in question do not have the USDA mark of inspection and do not identify the ingredients.
The labeling lapse was discovered on October 26, 2017, by an inspector of the Office of Investigations, Enforcement and Audit Compliance during routine in-commerce surveillance activities.
There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should get in touch with a healthcare provider.
