Blimey! For those who didn’t receive an official invitation to attend the May 19 Royal Wedding Reception in St. George’s Hall at Windsor Castle in honor of British Prince Harry and American actress Meghan Markle tying the knot, no worries. You too can party regally – without first calling on the Bank of England, though not like 1999 – with the timely assistance of UK frozen food retail specialist Iceland Foods.
Just fork over the non-princely sum of £8 to buy a duplicate version of the royal wedding cake and eat it too. Neil Nugent, Iceland’s head chef, says that his rendition of the Violet Bakery creation will look almost identical to Claire Ptak’s real deal. Available for only one week starting May 14, it features three layers of lemon sponge filled with elderflower buttercream and Sicilian lemon curd, covered with more buttercream and adorned with flowers.
For those who might prefer reveling royally at teatime, Iceland is offering a Royal Afternoon Tea Deal Package at £7. The all-frozen portfolio comes complete with six Mr Kipling’s Viennese Whirls , four Devon Scones, four mini pork pies, one luxury strawberry conserve, a dozen mini éclairs, 12 mini savoury eggs and 20 cocktail sausages.
Meanwhile, for an afternoon tea perhaps more suited for the tillerman, Burger King is celebrating the regal nuptials by serving up Chicken Royale across the United Kingdom through Sunday, May 20. Priced at just £1.99, the special wedding-themed sandwich boasts breaded chicken, iceberg lettuce, barbecue sauce and a pair of onion rings (said to signify “royal matrimony”).
Here’s wishing the best of the best for Harry and Meghan. With only a few days to go before they say “I do,” a few lyrics from songwriter Cat Stevens come to mind: “Oh Lord, how they play and play…for that happy day, for that happy day.”
God Save the Queen!
