McCain Foods USA, Inc. is voluntarily recalling retail frozen hash browns that could be contaminated with extraneous golf ball materials that may have inadvertently entered processing lines along with harvested potatoes used to make the product. Consumption of the hash browns in question could pose a choking hazard or other physical injury to one’s mouth.
The impacted products, each packed in two-pound bags, include the following: Roundy’s brand Southern Style Hash Browns (UPC 001115055019) and Harris Teeter label Southern Style Hash Browns (UPC 007203649020).
The Round’s products were distributed at Marianos, Metro Market and Pick ’n Save supermarkets throughout Illinois and Wisconsin. The Harris Teeter SKUs were shipped to stores in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, the District of Columbia, Delaware, Florida, Georgia and Maryland.
Distribution began after January 19, 2017, the day of manufacture.
The production code date is B170119, and can be found on the back of the packaging. Any product with a different production code date is not impacted by this recall, nor are other frozen potato products packed by McCain under the two brand names.
Thus far there have been no reported injuries associated with consumption of the products. Consumers who have either of the items in their home freezers are urged to throw them away or return them to the place of purchase for a refund.
“Food safety remains a top priority for McCain Foods USA, and we have full confidence that all appropriate steps are being taken to protect our consumers,” said the company in a prepared statement issued on April 21. “We are working cooperatively with the Food & Drug Administration and the respective supermarkets to ensure the affected products are removed from the marketplace.”
