Markham, Ontario-based Sofina Foods Inc. is recalling frozen Compliments Chicken Strips from retail stores in Canada due to possible Salmonella contamination. Uncooked breaded products distributed under the brand name in 907-gram packs may have recently sickened 11 or more people across seven provinces.
The Public Health Agency of Canada investigating an outbreak of illness has reportedly identified Compliments products as a likely source of the problem. An ongoing probe, under direction of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), may lead to the recall of other stock keeping units.
The products currently in question (UPC 0 57742 33687 0) carry an outer package code of 2019 No. 24 and an inner package code of 3288M. Sold nationally until May 1, 2019, they have a November 24, 2019 “Best Before” date and bears an EST 374 identifier connoting place of manufacture.
Food contaminated with Salmonella may not look or smell spoiled, but can nonetheless cause illness. Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may contract serious and sometimes deadly infections. Healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.
