Kellogg’s Eggo Breakfast Sandwiches were in high profile along with a raft of other new products and established lines from other producers during the Taste of Excellence Grand Opening Reception at the recently held US National Frozen & Refrigerated Foods Convention in Orlando, Florida. The Battle Creek, Michigan-based company seized the occasion to promote the new line among retail buyers and distributors.

Three varieties, all featuring soft, waffle-style bread, were available to sample: Bacon, Egg & Cheese (77 grams per serving); plain Egg & Cheese (92 grams); and Sausage, Egg & Cheese (98 grams). They are distributed in four-packs.

Kellogg has long been a major player in the frozen waffle sector, where its Eggo brand is the retail market leader with an estimated 70% share. In recent years its presence has been bolstered in the value-added breakfast sandwich segment, which is a growing part of the $3.3 billion frozen breakfast foods market in the USA. Year-on-year category sales through August 30, 2014, were up 3.4%, according to Nielsen data.

Marcus Chiu, senior marketing manager, pointed out that Kellogg’s Eggo Breakfast Sandwich range provides an “easy way to provide families with a warm breakfast option that has a good source of protein to keep them going through the morning.”

Kellogg also spotlighted its MorningStar Farms Golden Veggie Nuggets, which are promoted as “tasty, veggie-riffic alternatives to chicken nuggets.” Made with organic red quinoa, carrots and bell peppers, the GMO-free vegan bites also contain cannellini beans and garden vegetables seasoned with onions, garlic and basil.

The Kellogg Company, which offers an expansive product assortment of more than 1,600 items that range from frozen breakfasts and cereals to cookies, crackers and snacks, rang up sales of $14.8 billion in 2013.
