Sunrise Growers Recalls Private Label Frozen Fruit from Retail Stores in US

Minneapolis, Minnesota-headquartered Sunrise Growers, a subsidiary of SunOpta Inc, has issued a voluntary recall of specific frozen fruit packages linked to pineapple supplied by a third party vendor the may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, a pathogenic bacterium. The products were distributed to the following retail outlets in the United States:

Walmart: Great Value Mixed Fruit (70,360 cases of 16-ounce plastic bags), Great Value Dark Sweet Cherries (3,305 cases), and Great Value Mango Chunks (8,569 cases) sold at stores in Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Washington DC, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia and Wyoming.

Whole Foods: 365 Organic Tropical Fruit Medley (34,578 cases containing 32-ounce plastic bags), 365 Organic Pineapple Chunks (14,946 cases), 365 Pineapple Chunks (8,049 cases), 365 Organic Whole Strawberries (13,017 cases), 365 Organic Slice Strawberries and Bananas (3,691 cases), and 365 Organic Blackberries (2,181 cases) distributed to select stores throughout the United States from November 1, 2022 to June 21, 2023.

Aldi: 38,909 cases of 32-ounce plastic bags of Season’s Choice Tropical Blend distributed to select distribution centers or stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Vermont and West Virginia from October 11, 2022 to May 22, 2023.

Target: 3,961 cases of 32-ounce plastic bags of Good & Gather Organic Cherries and Berries Fruit Blend, Good & Gather Dark Sweet Whole Pitted Cherries (1,515 cases), Good & Gather Mango Strawberry Blend (238 cases), Good & Gather Mixed Fruit Blend (8,178 cases), Good & Gather Mango Chunks (871 cases), Good & Gather Blueberries (5,344 cases), and Good & Gather Triple Berry Blend (6,034 cases) distributed nationwide from October 14, 2022 to May 22, 2023.

AWG (Associated Wholesale Grocers): 1,088 cases of 12-ounce plastic bags of Best Choice Pitted Red Tart Cherries Unsweetened distributed to select distribution centers or stores in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma from April 5 to May 4, 2023.

Trader Joe’s: 2,588 cases of 16-ounce plastic bags of Trader Joe’s Organic Tropical Fruit Blend distributed to select distribution centers or stores in Arkansas, Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Maine, Minnesota, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Vermont, Wisconsin and Washington DC from March 28 to April 11, 2023.

No illnesses have been associated with this voluntary recall to date. Listeria monocytogenes. The pathogenic bacteria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

Consumers are urged to check their home freezers for the items in question. The fruit should not be consumed, but either discarded or returned to the place of purchase for a full refund.
