Undeclared Wheat Allergy Alert in Shakespeare’s Pizza Prompts Recall

Shakespeare’s Pizza of Columbia, Missouri, USA is recalling its non-meat topped frozen pizzas from grocery stores, as they contain wheat not declared on package labels. Consumers who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to the ingredient run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they eat these products. No illnesses have been reported to date.

The 12-inch pizzas subject to recall were distributed to retailers throughout Missouri, as well as to a small number of grocery stores in the in the Kansas City metropolitan area of Kansas. Product flavors and UPC codes subject to the recall are as follows: Shakespeare’s Extra Cheese (686 148 007 370); Vegetarian (686 148 007 394); Four Cheese ( 686 148 000 050); Spinach Artichoke (686 148 000 043).

“There should not be a problem for those who have no allergies to, or issues with wheat products. But chowing on our frozen pies does present a health hazard to those with a sensitivity or allergy to wheat,” reads a notice posted at the company’s website. “We are recalling the mislabeled pizzas and replacing them with pizzas that are correctly labeled.”

A routine inspection by the Food & Drug Administration brought to light the declaration omission. Consumers who have dietary restrictions concerning wheat should not eat the pizzas, but return then to the point of purchase for a refund.
