United States Cold Storage (USCS) has completed a 4.1 million-cubic-foot expansion in Wilmington, Illinois, thus significantly enhancing the company’s storage and distribution capabilities in the nation’s Midwest. Three rooms were added, including one dedicated freezer room and two others with convertible temperature controls.
Built in 2009, the Wilmington facility is situated about 60 miles southwest of Chicago and works with sister sites in nearby Minooka and Lyons. The addition boosts the operation’s storage capacity to nearly 10 million cubic feet and 16,000 pallet positions.
Greg Rohrbaugh, general manager, said that the Wilmington coldstore had been operating at maximum levels and needed more dock space and loading doors. He attributed the fast growth at Wilmington to increased business levels among successful customers in the region.
“Expansion means great things for USCS Wilmington,” added Dave Butterfield, vice president and area manager for the midwest. “Our presence is strong and the services we offer are what our customers are looking for.”
Rohrbaugh noted that USCS’ multi-vendor freight consolidation program “is definitely the driver of business” in transportation services for USCS and its three Chicago-area locations.
Looking down the road, there’s even more room to grow in the future, and expansion could include rail access and docks if required. USCS Wilmington sits on a developed 35-acre site with plenty of space for two more expansions. Potential build-out capacity totals nearly 18 million cubic feet with over 67,000 pallet positions.
Wilmington provides storage at temperatures ranging from -10F to +50F, and features an enclosed, refrigerated 65-foot loading dock and 41 truck dock doors. It offers custom distribution programs, specialized case picking and order assembly, slip sheet loading/unloading, stretch wrapping for palletized orders, USDA inspection services and documentation, and import-export services.
Headquartered in Vorhees, New Jersey, USCS is ranked as the third largest public refrigerated warehouse logistics provider in North America. It offers national, regional and international clients 210 million cubic feet of temperature-controlled storage and distribution space at 35 facilities in 12 states including California, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Nebraska, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah and Virginia.
