White Castle, best known for serving hamburgers, has announced that it is now the first fast food chain in the USA to offer seafood crab cake sandwiches system wide. Available for a limited time, its recently launched Seafood Crab Cake Slider is topped with zesty Creole sauce and served on signature slider buns.
“White Castle has been innovating since 1921, when we started the first fast food chain. Today we are proud to continue leading the industry by being the first to offer a seafood crab cake sandwich at all restaurants. The bold and unique flavors of this limited-time offer are joined by the Craver favorite, Shrimp Nibblers,” said Jamie Richardson, vice president of the Columbus, Ohio-headquartered company.
The Shrimp Nibblers, made with butterfly shrimp, are offered with a choice of four dipping sauces: cocktail, ranch, tartar or zesty zing. Other seafood on the menu includes Clam Strips, Fish Sliders and Fish Nibblers made with wild, sustainable Alaska pollock.
On the occasion of the Seafood Crab Cake Sliders rollout, a publicity-keen White Castle operator near Chicago placed a newspaper advertisement inviting employees at McDonald’s Restaurants corporate headquarters in Oakbrook, Illinois, to his White Castle outlet in nearby Lombard to sample the sandwich free of charge.
“They’re [McDonald’s] test marketing a crab sandwich out in San Francisco, and we just happen to think for all the employees at their corporate headquarters, that 2,200 miles away is too far to go if they want to enjoy a crab sandwich. So we extended an invitation for them to join us at our Lombard White Castle, which is only 4.9 miles away from Oakbrook,” said Richardson.
The offer came with an incentive, reported WBBM Newsradio’s Mike Krauser: “If 50 or more McDonald’s employees show up for the free seafood sliders, White Castle will donate $10,000 to Ronald McDonald House Charities, which Richardson said they will do anyway.”
No word yet on how many McD diners accepted the invitation.
